Navigation SOPs

- Plot DR Every ____. Low visibility plot every ____ hour.

- Old Watch posts Last DR or FIX

- Only restart DR with a VERY HIGH Quality FIX

- Log First, Plot Second

- Always Label Work:

- Log Every Change of course & Major speed change (log speed, distance, depth, heading, wind direction & speed, VTS reports, barometer, bilge)

- Plot position when passing known landmarks

- Hourly Loran/electronic FIX

- Listen & Record VTS (Channel 12) 15 minutes before and after the hour

- If in/near shipping lanes & visibility is less then 2 miles call VTS (Channel 13) to check for traffic. Be ready to give position, heading and speed.

- Listen to weather at watch change (W1 or W2).

- Listen to weather every hour if conditions change rapidly

- Do danger bearings & danger depths at course changes (if necessary)
